Today I would like to share with you 10 ways to decorate a rental house.
As a renter myself, I wanted my house to reflect my taste and my personality. I love to decorate and DIY-ing staff and somehow I had to find a way to make my rental house into a home.
That being said, let’s see what you can temporarily change to feel your home completely yours.
1. Paint the walls
Paint is the easiest and inexpensive way to personalize your space. You can paint yourself or hire a professional. But first, make sure you have your landlord’s permission. Most landlords have no problem whatsoever to paint the walls, as long as it is a neutral color (white, beige, light gray). If this is not your style, you have to promise to your landlord that you repaint the house before leaving.
2. Change out the hardware
Replace the knobs and the handles on all cabinets and drawers that existed at home. Although it may seem funny, this little change makes a big impact. Upgrade your kitchen’s hardware and you will see a big difference. And for just a few dollars apiece. When the time comes to leave this house, all you have to do is switch the old hardware back in place.
3. Use temporary wallpaper
Wallpapers are a perfect solution to dress up your walls. Look for and find a beautiful design that meets your taste and put it on your walls. The wallpaper industry has grown massively the past few years making it possible to put up temporary wallpaper. They are easily removed so they will not cause any damage to the walls.
4. Change the lighting fixtures
The easiest way to upgrade a rental is to change the lighting fixtures. Visit flea markets and yard sales and look for that perfect chandelier. Repaint it with spray paint if you wish and put it in your space. Store the old ones and when it’s time to move out, simply replace them.
5. Switchplates
Another thing you can do is by switching the aged, yellowed plates, for new, bright white ones. It’s not a big deal, but it’s something that will make your space looks fresh.
6. Use rags
If you don’t like the floors of the house at all, just put area rugs. Area rugs add warmth and texture to space. They are the solution to flat unsightly floors.
7. Hang art
Hang your favorite photos and art with 3M command wall stickers and enjoy the view! Not only you will have a home that you love staying in, but you won’t make any holes on the walls too. Your landlord will thank you for that.
8. Consider wall decals
If you don’t want to dress up your walls with wallpaper, come up with wall decals. Wall decals are a great and inexpensive way to spruce up a room.
9. Replace your faucets
If your faucet is old, sticky, leaky don’t put so much thought into this. Just pick up a new one at your local hardware store and change it. I’m pretty sure that your landlord won’t mind.
10. Put new window treatments
Let’s face it! Window treatments make such a big impact in a space. And if your landlord refuses to let you paint, window treatments are a must. For example, if there are blinds on the windows, you can cover them with curtains.
Tip: Hang your curtains as high as your room will allow. That will make your room seem larger.
